After the birth, I stay for at least 2 hours. Usually, it's more around 4-6 hours. Others on the birth team may go home earlier. There are some essential items that have to be taken care of--monitoring the mother and baby, cutting the cord, making sure the placenta is complete, doing the newborn exam, cleaning up, and checking for lacerations. I do a thorough newborn exam when the baby is approximately 1 hour old. Prior to that, I like to give the family some private time.
This is an assessment of the baby's physical health. It is an extensive examination from head to toe. This exam helps determine whether or not the baby needs to see a doctor and at what point.
This time I do the traveling. I come over at 1 day, and approximately at 3 days, 6 days, and 10 days postpartum. If you live more than 1 hour away, I will do 3 postpartum visits in your home. These visits are 1-2 hours long. You come to my office for an appointment at 3 weeks and 6 weeks postpartum. You are welcome to call and update me after our professional relationship has ended.
